Hermon School Committee had a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, February 3rd in the Hermon High School Library.

Prior to the School Committee meeting there was a small reception for the incoming Superintendent, Dr. Barbara Sargent, at the High School cafeteria. Dr. Sargent starts as the new Superintendent on April 1st.

Five employees have decided to retire at the end of this school year:

  • Susan McGown and Catherine Thompson - Pre-K Ed Techs

  • David Morin - Custodian

  • James Fratini - 8th Grade Science Teacher

  • Janet O’Clair-4th Grade Teacher

We wish them all the best in their future endeavors - they will certainly be missed.

Several policies were addressed during the meeting. All the policies were “2nd readings” and were approved without any further amendments or revisions.

The School Committee agreed to two trainings in the coming months; Maine School Management Association will be invited to provide training on Boards-man-ship and the Maine School Board Association Delegate Assembly. This training is projected for July 2025. The committee also agreed to training on the budget process. This training is tentatively scheduled for October 2025.

The committee approved the 1st reading of the 2026 school calendar. There were two dates discussed: Graduation 2026, and local election day in June 2026. It was identified by Mr. Walsh, the High School Principal, that the traditional graduation date will conflict with the State Track Meet. This conflict could possibly impact several graduating seniors that qualify for the State finals. An alternative graduation date will be considered at the March School Committee meeting. The second concern was related to local elections on Tuesday, June 9th. The Town has requested through the Secretary of State to move the polling location from the elementary school to the high school. If the change of location is not approved the elementary school will remain the town polling location and the elementary school will schedule a remote learning day.

The big topic for the night was the Fiscal Year 2026 Budget. A draft budget was provided by the administration to the Committee and public for review. The initial projected increase to the FY 2026 school budget is 7.3%. The School Committee is having a Special Committee meeting on Thursday, February 13th at 4pm in the High School Library to further discuss the budget and seek a reduction in the overall budget.

The schedule for school budget development is:

  • Tuesday 1/21/25 Finance Committee Meeting 4pm HHS Library

  • Monday 2/3/25 Regular February Board Meeting 6:30pm HHS Library

  • Thursday 2/13/25 Special Meeting 4pm HHS Library

  • Thursday 2/27/25 Finance Committee Meeting 4pm HHS Library

  • Monday 3/3/25 Regular March Board Meeting 6:30pm HHS Library (First Reading FY26 Budget)

  • Monday 3/10/25 Special Board Meeting 6:30pm HHS Library (Second Reading/Approval FY26 Budget)

  • Thursday 3/13/25 Meeting with the Town Council
